One of my all time favorite photography videos, and inspired me to go for more complex and ambitious shots – not just the lighting, but the whole approach to realising a still picture, as a “production” just like a motion picture shoot. Watching this for the first time a couple of years ago was a light-bulb moment for me. Joe’s a great narrator of the whole process too – and you get why he’s made this choice or that and a sense of how the solution develops throughout the shoot.

I’ve used both of these set-ups (or very similar) over the last few months and they both worked first time – and not because I’m some kinda genius – it’s because I watched Joe do it first on this course :)

One thing – at 1:35 or so on lesson 15 – you can now change the X-Sync value on Nikon cameras in custom setting e1. I have this set to 1/160th on my “Studio” settings bank so I can flip between bulb and x-sync with one wheel click, and 1/250 on my “normal” bank.

I consider myself pretty good with strobes, so I went into this thinking i could follow along pretty well… Yep I’m not ashamed to say that Joe spanks my knowledge of speed lights. I’m used to seeing videos that are fairly straight forward (dragging shutter, etc.), but with this video his experience really shines through. There was enough flash in these shots to give viewers at home a seizure and I loved every moment of it! I’m a huge fan of Joe’s and his assistants are very lucky to be able to work with him. I cant wait for Joe to come to Miami. —- Yes, please post my feedback
