With a background in shooting sports teams while in high school Dixie has evolved through a number of photography jobs while pursuing a business degree in college. Getting experience as an assistant was instrumental in being able to launch her own business.
Finding a mentor is an organic process that often develops through a business relationship, but having people that you can go to with questions is incredibly valuable. Having an agent is great for having another avenue for finding work, but you still need to hustle on your own. Be prepared to cold call ad agencies and keep your portfolio up to date.
Marketing is a balancing act between cold calls, social media, and direct mailings, but the key is getting those face-to-face meetings that land the actual jobs.
